The practice

Built inside the work.

Data only works when the people using it trust it.

Clemfield is a Nottingham studio for UK Higher Education data: governance, Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and the statutory reporting layer most consultancies treat as an afterthought. The work starts with the people who have to live with it.

How the work happens.

Three principles that shape every engagement: consulting, templates, or a product build.

Stakeholders first.

The best dashboard nobody uses is worth less than a rough one everyone trusts. Adoption is designed in, not bolted on.

Fixed scope, no surprises.

Fixed-fee packages wherever possible. No hourly meter, no scope drift, no six-figure surprise invoices at the end.

Built to outlive the engagement.

Documentation, training, walkthroughs and SOPs are part of the deliverable. Teams keep using the work after the contract ends.

Why the work looks like this.

Most data consulting starts with technology and ends up asking why nobody uses the finished thing. Clemfield starts the other way around: with the stakeholders, the politics, the “yes but we’ve always done it this way” objections. Get those right and the technology part is the easy bit.

Data only works when the people using it trust it.

Higher Education, from the inside.

The practice grew out of a decade inside UK universities: Portsmouth, Nottingham, Leicester, and the Royal Veterinary College, plus adjacent work in clinical data and software delivery. That is why the pain points are familiar before a kick-off call.

It means knowing why HESA returns feel impossible until they don’t, why OfS reviews eat months, why Access & Participation Plans get published and then abandoned. It means having sat in enough meetings to know when “no capacity” means no capacity, and when it means no confidence.

That shapes every engagement. Dashboards are designed for the way academic leadership actually reads a report. Governance frameworks are structured for the way HE committees actually make decisions. Statutory returns are built with the audit trail baked in from day one.

The same problem, more than one surface.

Two products came out of the consulting work. Deighta turns fragmented exports from PebblePad, TargetConnect and Studiosity into dashboards non-technical teams can actually read. Power BI embedded with custom React, because that is what the problem needed. Curateo is a consumer beta applying the same modelling instincts to weekend planning in Nottingham. Both exist because sitting inside a problem long enough eventually means building the thing, not just describing it.

In 2026 the studio added downloadable dashboard templates for UK HE (NSS and OfS APP are ready; HESA is in development), so institutions that cannot budget for a full engagement still get a well-designed head start. Web Design & Build is open for early enquiries: the same design and build craft, for small service businesses.

Same conviction, more surfaces. Data that people trust. Products that ship. Websites that work.
